You sell yourself short, Karen. You are one of the kindest people I have met here on Medium!
As for pitbulls, yes - they do have a bad rap which I don't buy into 100%. I agree that the owner has a helluva lot to do with their behaviour - and any dog's behaviour.
Having said that, I have a friend that had 2 pitbulls: one is as sweet as pie but if she sees another unfamiliar dog she goes ape. But she would lick and follow me and curl on my lap like a pussycat. The other he had to have euthanized as he attacked him when he became spooked and he was worried the dog would do the same to someone else.
I met a guy in the elevator a few days ago with his pitbull. She seemed so placid and we talked about the reputation they have. I commented on how sweet she was but did not even attempt to pet it. Yes it was fear, but also respect.
I won't ever approach any dog - regardless of breed - until I know if they're friendly or not. I think our assumption that a 'dog is man's best friend therefore every dog is' - is a little too trusting! It's kind to inquire about their temperament before shoving your hand out for a lick - or a bite!
You are being kind by respecting their temperaments Your 2022 journey will endorse that! Good luck, my friend - for the contest and for the love of dogs ❤️
