This story reminded me of the saga of purchasing our first house in Montreal - and it wasn't a divorcing couple but a self-centred businessman and his wife. The agents took a % cut in their commission because the seller was so vile to us with all the ridiculous demands they were making ( and we were like your buyers; no house to sell, mortgage already good to go etc)
