Tessa, your statement is out of the context that I stated: 'Whether you're sending in a draft to a publisher or entering a writing contest, a submission should be seen as an opportunity to learn and grow'.

I wasn't JUST talking about entering contests. As a newbie, everytime I push enter when submitting a story, I am waiting word from people who have been in this game longer than me for feedback. With a contest, it's do or die. My point was, it IS a remote chance of winning, so put your best foot forward in hope - but with the knowledge it's a fat chance. Most writers can learn from the experience...
