I’m terrified of the ocean, especially what lies beneath. It possibly stems from standing on a dead fish in the sand as a child. The force of the waves, being out of my depth and my dislike for having my head underwater are the perfect trifecta to deter this gal from going more than waist-high in any water bed.

Yet, I’m intrigued when someone else takes pictures and video footage of underwater life. It’s fascinating to watch alternative life forms surviving in an aquatic habitat.

My Octopus Teacher is an Academy Award-winning documentary about the interactions of South African Filmmaker, Craig Foster, and an octopus. It is inconceivable to think a bond could develop between a human and a Cephalopod, but during the 85 minutes, you become witness to a remarkable connection.

For almost a year, Craig visited the same kelp forest daily to observe, interact and document the behaviour of an octopus. He trained himself to acclimatize to the cold water without a wet suit or a constant supply of oxygen — he felt they created a barrier — so he had to always resurface for air.

The octopus is initially on the defence, using all her suction cups to hold shells around her body as camouflage, but…
