First of all - what a gorgeous picture! You are a natural beauty.

As a teacher, I meet a lot of students. Many are immigrants; others were born in Canada but clearly have pronounced genes. I'm uber cautious about asking 'where are you from originally' because many were born here, so technically always Canadian. It's insulting to assume.

Although I am white, the second I open my mouth - despite living in Canada for 27 years - people know I am not from here. I am proud of my NZ heritage. I joke when asked if I am Australian ( #1 misconception) or South African ( #2). In 27 years only 2 people have hit the nail on the head that I am a kiwi first pop!

And that's ok. I'm a rarity here!

I don't see their confusion as disrespectful as even I mess up these days...my ears are not in tune! Rather - it's an opportunity to share with them about my wonderful heritage and most are willing to listen.

In the end, race or creed matters not. It's kindness and respect for individuality.
